Land Rover wind shield for rear door table

 22 Feb 2021

    I was going to take my steel recycling in and amongst the pile was the old case that the propane burners came out of. As I checked it out I realized that it still had the wind shields attached, something I had been contemplating making for my rear door table since I made it.

My mind jumped to thinking I could install these Coleman ones on my door. So I drilled out the pop rivets on the hinges set them aside and went to the recycling.

Upon returning home I set about trial fitting the shields and worked out a way to mount them. The hinges had to be set outside the stored table.

So on to the pics;

The first 2 show the hinge placement when the table is stored in the upright position.

This crappy image shows the shields in the open position when the table is down.

A better view;

The hinges when the shield is in use;

How the hinges fold up prior to storing the table.

The shields have little wire clamps for securing on the propane case when open, I found these will hook around the support wires for my table when open.

Camp lamp

 19 Feb 2021

Forever as an adult I used Coleman white gas lanterns. First we had a double burner and it really put out the light and the hissy noise. While I liked the light I did not like the fragility of the mantles and frequently had to replace 2-3 per trip. I also did not care for the fuel one had to carry around inside the car. Ever get a leak? It isn't nice.......

Then after the wife left and kids moved out I got me a single burner. Same issues just a smaller footprint.

Battery headlamps and lanterns seemed a godsend! Quiet light at the flick of a switch, press of a button! Amazing!!! Ever had a bulb go out? or the batteries go flat?

Always something.  So I started looking around at modern camping/emergency light. At home when the power goes off I light up some candles. They last a long time and don't go flat. Here are the last of my 4 candles.

After looking around I decided I wanted to try one of the old Hurricane lamps and started to search them out. There is a popular American brand, Dietz, but I found they are made in China now, so I passed. In the meantime I came across a German made brand Feuerhand; https://www.feuerhand.com/
 What sealed me on these is I was watching Wild Woman Bushcraft on youtube and Vanessa used one at night and the flame was bright and did not flicker.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmkXwVmBMgY
 I had no idea there were so many colors! I wanted a signal yellow one for 2 reasons;  1) less likely to not see it when breaking camp    2) HEY! it matches my 109!

I found one at ; https://lanternnet.com/   A Baby 276  ;https://lanternnet.com/product/feuerhand-276-baby-special-cold-blast-lantern/

Today I went to the hardware store and picked up some clear lamp oil. I wanted unscented so to not attract bugs and or critters.

I filled the tank which is supposed to be a 20 hour supply and in the pic below I am pointing at the lever to raise the glass globe prior to lighting.

The next shows the globe raises and you can see the 1/2" cotton wick, I picked up a couple of extras at the hardware store.

Here I am lighting it.

The wick needs to kinda burn into shape and you need to raise or lower the wick with the knob on the side to adjust the light.

Bright,

Dimmer.

I have a real thing about storing these fuel in plastic containers and throwing them in a vehicle and going camping.

So I finally get to use one of the 5L NATO cans I bought, I think I can fit 2 of these bottles in one can.

Of course I labeled it.
