My 1st Land Rover movie

In Aug 73 I bought a 64, 88. In Dec we had unusual snow. I took my cousins up to the snow and here is the movie we filmed. It was shot in Super 8 with no sound, the only thing you hear is the humm of my computer.

Series Land Rover window bug screen

   I have always wanted to have some sort of  bug screen for the windows on the doors of my Series vehicles ever since;

   It was Independence Day weekend in 1977, My wife and I were on our way to the Black Rock Desert to meet up with Scotty Howatt's annual desert get together. We were heading North on Nevada Hwy 447 just north of Nixon where you come around a bend and there you can see down to Pyramid Lake.
   At this point one can see a dirt double track heading down to the lakeside. We decided to go down and take a look. It was a couple of hot miles down the dusty track to the lake where we could park the 88 and walk to the waters edge.
    We opened the vents in the bulkhead and closed the windows and walked down towards the cool, cool water.
    After a few minutes we were swarmed by mosquitoes and ran back to the 88 in full retreat! We ran around to throw off the buggers and jumped inside. Well, they must have known about Land Rovers...the little buggers were coming in thru the vents despite the fly screen, somehow they knew there was a gap where the lever was..........
   We slammed the vents shut and started up the 2.25P and headed out, me driving and Marla swatting as many of the little vampires as she could.
   Did I mention it was hot? When we opened the windows or the vents the mossies went into hiding. Later to pop out when the Rover stopped.

Now back to 2018.

    Since Series Rovers don't come with air conditioning ventilation is a necessity! My 109 has rear windows and screens, but sometimes you want/need more. Especially if you are in the front and want some crossflow air movement. Without screens sometimes it is not available.

   (begin satire)To this I addressed my powerful intellect and fabulous fabrication skills.(end satire)

    I was watching some show on YuuuuuuuTuuuuube and suddenly I had an idea for a front door window bug screen.
   Needing material I searched my garage for the right size rod to make a prototype. I found some 3/16" stuff I have that doesn't seem to rust(that's good) and fit in the window channel.
Suppose now would be a good place to say I have the Rocky Mountain dual sliding window door tops.

Here you can see me fitting the rod to the opening. After it was all done I should have made it 1/8" looser on the width.

With the whole 4' rod bent and fitted;

Next up was the screen. I have some nylon screen left over from a house project and putting the rod on top of it I marked off an extra inch for the overlay. At this point I was thinking I could just glue it or heat it up and melt it together. That didn't work out in testing, but the gluing might.

Cutting out along the lines and I had this;

My glue test was still curing so I tore off some strips of the nylon screen and used them to sew the rod inside the screen. It went well.

Here is how it looks fitted. You can see that there is an opening where the glass is but I don't think any critter will find it easily.

I would really like to have it be accessible for installation/removal from the inside. I think that could be doable with something made from one of those pop open sun screens frames.

Looking out with the window open;

Now I need to make one for the front of the window, and for both doors.....

So I spent a couple of hours today, most of it being sewing time;

screen cut out;

Fitted;

There is a gap at the back as my frame rod is not long enough. I think 5' would be just fine.

I might just take it apart and weld a foot into it. Then it would have pressure to fit the back glass.
